Klickitat County is exploring the possibility of having Skamania County process Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area land use applications from their residents. Klickitat County has never adopted a scenic area ordinance of its own, leaving its residents within the scenic area to submit applications directly to the Gorge Commission for review. But the Gorge Commission recently asked Klickitat County officials to help pay for those applications as they deal with a limited budget, indicating process times could go well over a year. Klickitat County Commissioner David Sauter says they won't be adopting their own ordinance and really don't want to pay the Commission itself, but would prefer to work with a county like Skamania that already does the applications. Sauter says they are waiting to hear from Skamania County on whether they are interested in handling those applications, and how much it would cost.
